Why Is Dental Care So Important For Cats?
Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in cats, but it’s notoriously difficult for their owners to spot. Cats are naturally good at hiding their discomfort and they may continue behaving and eating as normal, even when they are in quite a lot of dental pain.
Problems can range from plaque and tartar build-up to gingivitis, periodontal disease, infections and tooth resorption, the latter of which is a painful condition where the structure of a tooth begins to break down. Without the appropriate cat dental treatment, oral disease can progress as time goes on, causing more discomfort and potentially making it difficult to eat a varied, balanced diet.
Regular dental examinations give our veterinary team an opportunity to identify changes before they become more advanced. Most cats also benefit from professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that cannot be dealt with at home.
Between appointments, it’s important that you, as the owner, look out for changes in your pet, including bad breath, drooling, pawing at the mouth, difficulty chewing, dropping food, preferring softer foods or changes in appetite and behaviour. But dental disease isn’t always obvious, so even if you feel like nothing is wrong, this doesn’t necessarily mean your cat’s mouth is as healthy as it could be.

Why Choose The Cat Vet?
Cats aren’t simply one of the many types of creatures we encounter every day – they are the only species we treat!
The Cat Vet is the UAE’s first and only veterinary clinic dedicated exclusively to cats, providing an environment and approach designed around the medical, behavioural and emotional needs of these wonderful animals.
When you choose us for cat dental care in Dubai, your cat benefits from:
- A 4,500 sq ft specialist centre with dedicated surgical and dental facilities
- ISFM Gold Accredited feline care, which reflects high standards in cat-friendly veterinary practice
- A team with specific experience in feline medicine, including vets with advanced postgraduate qualifications and particular interests in dentistry, surgery and feline medicine
- Advanced dental X-ray facilities to assess areas of the tooth and jaw that can’t be examined visually
- Gold-standard anaesthetic monitoring for procedures performed under general anaesthesia
- A genuinely cat-only environment, which helps to remove many of the sights, sounds and smells associated with mixed-species veterinary clinics
Bad breath, visible tartar, red or inflamed gums, drooling, pawing at the mouth, difficulty chewing and changes in the way your cat eats can all indicate that there’s an underlying dental problem. However, cats are known to conceal their dental discomfort, so you might not know there’s an issue at all. This is why regular veterinary examinations are important, even when your cat appears to be eating normally.
There isn't a schedule that suits every cat – it’s very much down to their individual needs. The Cat Vet recommends regular dental check-ups and currently advises scaling and polishing at least every 12 months as a preventative measure. When you visit us, your vet may recommend a different schedule depending on your cat’s age, dental health and history.
A thorough professional dental procedure will generally be carried out under general anaesthesia, because this allows the veterinary team to properly examine and clean the teeth, including below the gumline, while keeping your cat still and comfortable. Our dental procedures can include a pre-anaesthetic assessment and fully monitored general anaesthesia. Your vet will explain the process and anything else that needs to be considered before the dental clean takes place.
A large proportion of each tooth lies below the gumline, which means some dental problems can’t be diagnosed by looking inside your cat's mouth. Dental X-rays enable our vets to assess the roots of the teeth and the surrounding periodontal bone. They can be particularly valuable when investigating painful conditions like tooth resorption or deciding whether a tooth needs to be extracted for good.
If a tooth is badly damaged, diseased or causing your cat pain, extraction may be the most appropriate course of action. Your vet will explain which teeth are affected, why we recommend that the tooth or teeth are taken out, and what the procedure involves.
Cats can generally adapt extremely well following necessary dental extractions, and remember, removing a painful tooth can make a significant difference to their comfort and quality of life. You will also receive aftercare instructions, giving you everything you need to make sure your cat is well looked after post-procedure.
The cost will depend on the condition of your cat’s teeth and the treatment plan we have recommended. The price of a straightforward professional clean will naturally be different from a treatment pathway that involves dealing with dental disease, organising X-rays or booking in for multiple extractions.
At The Cat Vet, dental packages currently start from AED 1,667.50 for scaling and polishing. But because every mouth is different, we always suggest arranging a dental assessment so that our veterinary team can advise you on a case by case basis.
